A trigger point is a small, tightly contracted band within a muscle. It is tender when pressed and often causes pain in another area, which is why a knot between the shoulder blades can contribute to headaches. Trigger points commonly develop when a muscle is held in one position for too long, overloaded or tensed to protect an injury.
A trigger point injection delivers a small amount of medication directly into the tight band to help it release. The appointment is quick and performed in our office, and most patients drive themselves home and return to their normal activities the same day.

Sarapin is a preparation derived from the pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea. Some patients ask for it specifically because they would rather not have a corticosteroid.
It is worth knowing that Sarapin is not an FDA-approved medication. It has been marketed in the United States since 1935 and is listed by the FDA under the category of unapproved drugs, which means the agency has not reviewed it for safety or for effectiveness. Insurers generally do not cover it.

We examine the muscle before we recommend anything. If trigger point injections are not the right answer for what you have, we will say so.
A consultation costs you half an hour and gets you a straight answer about whether this is worth doing.
There is a sting going in, and the muscle often twitches, which is uncomfortable for a second and is usually a sign the needle found the right band. Most people describe the whole thing as brief rather than painful. Some are sore at the site for a day or two afterwards.
We cannot tell you in advance. What we can tell you is that we reassess after each one, and if an injection has not done anything, we will not keep booking you in for more of the same.

Most people carry on with their day normally. Hard training on the treated muscle is usually better left a day or two. Your clinician will give you specific guidance for the area treated.
Assume not, and ask for the price before you book. Coverage for trigger point injections is narrow where it exists at all, and it generally depends on the specific injectate used and on documented failure of other treatment first.
